Mission Statement
Our mission is to stand in solidarity with the “Occupy” communities worldwide that originate from “Occupy Wall Street” and to promote awareness of social and economic injustice. We seek to inspire positive change through mutual collaboration and community building. We stand in unity to promote open dialogue so that everyone can voice ideas, seek solutions to common concerns, and implement those solutions through direct action.

Occupy Lawrence was initially formed as a group in solidarity with Occupy Wall St.  In solidarity, we recognize the need to protest, as we (in the words of Occupy Wall St) are “fighting back against the corrosive power of major banks and multinational corporations over the democratic process, and the role of Wall Street in creating an economic collapse that has caused the greatest recession in generations.”  Additionally, Occupy Lawrence recognizes the need to create spaces for open exchanges ideas between everyone both a part of and not a part of this movement.  We welcome anyone, regardless of gender, race, culture, sexual orientation, class, or ideology to be part of this conversation.  Currently, we are occupying the Northeast corner of the Western half of South Park in downtown.  We encourage anyone interested in contributing to Occupy Lawrence to attend our daily general assemblies, held at 6pm in South Park.  We also stage regular rallies at 9th & Mass each Saturday at 12 noon.

My name is Stephen Toothman from Occupy DSM. I am on the communications committee for the Des Moines General Assembly. The committee is looking to reach out to the other occupations in the Midwest to help coordinate actions and share information. To do this I have created a Google Group called occupymidwestoutreach. You can subscribe by sending an email to occupymidwestoutreach+subscribe@googlegroups.com.
